Tras la reciente inauguración del nuevo Aeropuerto Internacional Jorge Chávez (AIJCH) en Perú, el foco ahora se traslada a Chile, donde el Ministerio de Obras Públicas (MOP) ha presentado un ambicioso plan para triplicar la capacidad del Aeropuerto Internacional Arturo Merino Benítez (AMB) en Santiago, consolidando así su rol como uno de los principales hubs aéreos de Sudamérica.
El proyecto, cuya inversión preliminar asciende a 4.000 millones de dólares, contempla la construcción de un tercer terminal de pasajeros, una tercera pista de aterrizaje, un tren ligero entre terminales, la expansión del terreno aeroportuario, así como nuevos accesos viales y mejoras en la zona de carga.
De acuerdo con la titular del MOP, Jessica López, esta ampliación es “muy significativa en el tiempo”, y forma parte de una visión a largo plazo que proyecta movilizar 84 millones de pasajeros anuales y alcanzar 125 operaciones aéreas por hora hacia el año 2050, triplicando la capacidad actual del AMB.
La expansión aumentará la superficie del aeropuerto de 1.070 a 2.368 hectáreas, y de 380 mil m² construidos a más de un millón de metros cuadrados, extendiéndose hacia la zona norponiente, principalmente en las comunas de Pudahuel y, en menor medida, Lampa.
Según informó el MOP, el crecimiento sostenido del aeropuerto —que desde 2010 ha registrado un alza promedio del 10% anual en su demanda, excluyendo el periodo de pandemia— justifica priorizar esta ampliación sobre la construcción de un nuevo aeropuerto, al considerarse más eficiente tanto en costos como en beneficios sociales y operacionales.
Este megaproyecto refleja la importancia estratégica de la infraestructura aeroportuaria para la conectividad regional y el desarrollo económico a largo plazo, consolidando a Santiago como un punto clave del transporte aéreo en la región.
