El Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores del Perú informó que 74 connacionales se encuentran retenidos en un centro migratorio en San Diego, California, Estados Unidos, luego de que 500 peruanos fueran intervenidos por autoridades migratorias en la frontera sur de ese país. Los restantes compatriotas están distribuidos en otros centros de detención similares en la misma zona. La Cancillería ha instruido a los cónsules peruanos en EE.UU. para que visiten estos centros y brinden asistencia a los afectados.
Pedro Bravo, director general de Comunidades Peruanas en el Exterior y Asuntos Consulares, señaló que hasta el momento no se ha confirmado la deportación de ningún peruano, aunque no descartó que esto pueda ocurrir en los próximos días. “El Perú no ha recibido ningún ciudadano deportado, pero suponemos que va a ser así”, indicó. Además, Bravo enfatizó que los consulados están trabajando para ofrecer asesoría jurídica a los connacionales y mantener comunicación con las autoridades migratorias estadounidenses para conocer el estado de cada caso.
La Cancillería instó a los peruanos en situación migratoria irregular a mantener la calma, contactar con los consulados y evitar resistirse a las intervenciones de las autoridades. Asimismo, recomendó no presentar documentación falsa y, en su lugar, ejercer su derecho a guardar silencio y solicitar un abogado. Para fortalecer el apoyo, se han destinado recursos adicionales para asesoría legal y se ha establecido colaboración con organizaciones benéficas y estudios jurídicos pro-bono. La red consular peruana en EE.UU. también se ha reforzado con la apertura de nuevos consulados en Salt Lake City, Phoenix y Seattle, y se ha incrementado la capacidad de atención en países de tránsito para eventuales repatriaciones.
