La Cámara Nacional de Turismo del Perú (Canatur) alertó sobre el alto riesgo de huaicos en Machu Picchu, tras el incremento de lluvias en la región andina. Mediante una carta dirigida a la ministra de Comercio Exterior y Turismo, Úrsula León Chempén, el gremio empresarial advirtió sobre posibles afectaciones a la infraestructura turística y la seguridad de visitantes y residentes. José Koechlin, presidente de Canatur, señaló que el cambio climático, la deforestación y la falta de encauzamiento de ríos cercanos agravan el peligro, lo que podría causar “daños irreparables” a la población y al emblemático sitio patrimonio mundial.
Canatur recordó que huaicos anteriores, como los que impactaron Machu Picchu Pueblo, dejaron daños significativos y expusieron la vulnerabilidad de la zona. Además, subrayó el riesgo de que estos eventos manchen la imagen del Perú como destino turístico seguro. Ante ello, solicitó una reunión urgente con el Mincetur, el Gobierno Regional del Cusco, el Instituto de Manejo del Agua (IMA) y otras entidades para definir estrategias de prevención. Esta petición se enmarca en el Decreto Supremo Nº 021-2025-PCM, que declaró en emergencia a 157 distritos de 20 departamentos por las lluvias intensas, con un presupuesto asignado de 3,700 millones de soles para acciones multisectoriales.
La entidad turística instó a las autoridades a actuar con celeridad para evitar una tragedia. “Es crucial actuar de manera proactiva”, enfatizó Koechlin, destacando la necesidad de proteger a turistas y locales. Con el reloj en marcha, la presión aumenta para implementar medidas que salvaguarden no solo vidas, sino también el legado histórico y económico que representa Machu Picchu para el país.
